News teams at several Quincy Media, Inc. television stations are big winners in the 2019 Edward R. Murrow regional awards competition from the Radio Television Digital News Association.
Four QMI stations were awarded a total of seven Edward R. Murrow Awards. WREX-TV in Rockford, Illinois, brought home three awards, while WGEM-TV (Quincy, Ill.), WEEK-TV (Peoria, Ill.) and WPTA-TV (Fort Wayne, In.) also notched wins.
WREX’s three awards include the top honor of Overall Excellence. The station also won for Continuing Coverage and News Series, marking the second year in a row WREX has received three regional awards.
This is the fourth consecutive year 13 WREX has been honored with the award for Overall Excellence. This category recognizes a station for the totality of its journalistic efforts, including breaking news, continuing coverage, weather, sports community service and digital media.
WREX’s submission included work from its six-week series on domestic violence, investigations on Rockford’s Southeast Superfund site and Radon testing in schools, comprehensive coverage from Washington, D.C. for National Police Week, as well as numerous community service events the station hosted in 2018.
“Our station takes great pride in doing work that truly matters to the communities we serve,” said 13 WREX Station Manager, Josh Morgan. “Winning three Edward R. Murrow Awards for this work is humbling to all of us and tells us what we’re doing is having an impact on our viewers.”
This is the station’s 12th Regional Edward R. Murrow Award since 2015.

WGEM’s honor this year marks the fifth regional award since 2014. The station also previously received a national Edward R. Murrow award for Breaking News.
WGEM News received the regional Breaking News award this year, which specifically honors the news team’s coverage of the officer-involved shooting in Quincy last May, resulting in the death of a suspect. The officer’s actions were found to be justified.
“Immediately following the shooting, our journalists provided neighbors with important information about their immediate safety,” said Chad Mahoney, WGEM News Director.
“Then, our team worked to dig deeper into the story,” Mahoney explained. “We looked into the suspect’s history, the officer’s experience, body camera policies and historical data on recent officer-involved shootings.”
