WGEM News awarded for journalistic excellence

Johnston, Iowa – WGEM News received extensive honors during the Iowa Broadcast News Association’s annual convention held at the Stony Creek Inn in Johnston, Iowa, Saturday night.

WGEM News took home 13 awards, including the coveted “Overall Excellence in News” award.

In addition to Overall Excellence, WGEM News took home First Place awards in the categories of Sports Play-by-Play (Tony Cornish, Jr. – Football), News Photography (Ben Neisen) and Spot News (Fatal Fire Coverage).

WGEM News took home Second Place awards in the categories of Excellence in Anchoring (Natalie Will and Dylan Austin), Excellence in Weather Coverage (Blizzard Coverage), Sports Play-by-Play (Tony Cornish, Jr. – Basketball), In-Depth Reporting (Drew Brown – Dangerous Rentals) and Best Sportscast (WGEM Sports Extra).

Honorable Mention awards were given for Best Newscast (WGEM News at Ten), General Reporting (Dylan Austin – Flood of ’93: 25 Years Later), Political Coverage (The Midterm Election), and Excellence in Weather Coverage (Iowa Windstorm Coverage).

“We’re honored to accept these awards on behalf of our Southeast Iowa viewers. It’s a privilege to tell their stories,” WGEM News Director Chad Mahoney said. “These awards belong to the viewers just as much as they belong to the station.”

WGEM Vice-President and General Manager, Carlos Fernandez, said the awards are a recognition of the station’s daily commitment to the Tri States.

“Our leadership status in news coverage gives us a huge megaphone,” Fernandez said. “We believe it is our responsibility to use that for the benefit of the communities we serve.”
